5 Tips for Getting in Motion This Year

Don't Let the Couch Win - 5 Tips for Getting in Motion - Strengthen your Foundational Dimension and physical health this yearIt’s early in the year, a time when gyms are notoriously packed with new members. There’s something about turning the page on a new year that spurs everyone to commit to getting back into — or finally into — better physical health.

But by spring, the running joke is the gym herd thins out, with the call of the couch luring everyone back into hibernation.

But if you think about it — our physical health is no joke, and there’s more than the proverbial “getting into shape” that’s at stake.

Our physical well-being is a critical Foundational Dimension asset, and exercise can contribute to significant gains in health. In fact, according to a “Harvard Health Publishing” article, “In the short term, exercise helps to control appetite, boost mood, and improve sleep. In the long term, it reduces the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes, dementia, depression, and many cancers.”

It also follows that the better our health, the more energy and vitality we have to pour into our relationships, careers, finances, faith, communities, and ultimately, the legacy we leave behind to our children and grandchildren.

And while life can serve up setbacks that limit our ability to work out — illness, accidents, or injuries — there’s a lot we can generally do to improve our well-being.

So as you look at your Values & Vision Statement (which Doug Andrew walks you through in his article, “An Abundant Life for Your Family?”), if maintaining good health is one of your core values, read on for tips to make it easier to get (and stay) in motion to improve your overall Authentic Wealth.

Set Realistic Goals

Start with realistic goals. Instead of aiming for dramatic changes overnight, focus on incremental milestones. Be sure to write them down and revisit them, celebrating little wins to foster a sense of achievement that can motivate you to continue.  (Tip: You can use the My Foundational Dimension Goals tool to put your health/exercise goals in writing. You can download it for free using the link at the end of this article.)

Create a Schedule

Just as you schedule appointments and meetings, prioritize scheduling your workout sessions. Designate specific days and times for exercise, treating them with the same importance as any other commitment. This structured approach helps integrate exercise into your routine seamlessly.

Buddy Up

Journeys are more enjoyable when shared. Find a workout buddy who shares similar fitness goals and schedules. Exercising with someone can establish accountability and bring a fun social element that encourages staying on track. Invite a family member or friend to join you. (Bonus: You’re also strengthening relationships, another Foundational Dimension asset!)

Be Kind to Yourself

Understand that a little backsliding is natural. If you miss workouts or experience minor injuries, that’s to be expected! Be kind to yourself, avoid self-criticism, and focus on recommitting to your routine. Consistency is built over time, and resilience is crucial in maintaining it. Assure yourself that you can do it, despite any challenges.

Find Exercises You Enjoy

Exercise shouldn’t be a monotonous chore. Exploring various activities to find those you genuinely enjoy will help you stay engaged. Whether it’s walking, rock climbing, hiking, cycling, strength training, or low intensity HIIT workouts, find engaging activities that you love. This will increase the likelihood of long-term commitment as the exercise is something you want to do.

Keep in mind that it’s important to practice any kind of a workout with proper form and technique. Partner with a professional or a personal trainer to ensure you gain the maximum benefit and avoid injury.

And above all, have fun and aim for consistency. Make this the year you say no to the couch and yes to your physical health. Because your future self (and your loved ones) are depending on you!
